As everyday closes a new day must open, and with great joy and pride, I have the privilege of putting Tarpon Design to rest. Well, maybe not to rest... In all actuality, Tarpon Design is as alive as ever! But, after a careful analysis, and being tired of non-locals mispronouncing "Tarpon", or asking what a Tarpon is, what does it do, etc, etc... I've decided to retire the Tarpon Design jersey and move forward with a stronger name, a stronger brand, and more cuoth than ever. So to settle any questions, Design Dish is Tarpon Design, but think of it as on a global scale. Best Buy couldn't have gotten as big as it did if it was named "Charleston Electronics" and to allow Tarpon Design to grow into its' full potential, I've decided a restructuring of sorts is in order. I love what I do more and more everyday, and I want to continue to do it until I die or retire, not alot of people can say that, but I'm more than proud to be one

While perusing The Feed here on DesignDish, I happened across this item about the BP cleanup efforts. Wanting to know more, I clicked over to MSNBC.com for the full story. This is what I saw:

Check out this page at full size to get the full effect. In short, my first reaction was to close the browser window and huddle shaking in the corner of a cold shower. I felt assaulted; abused. This is information overload at its worst.
There’s a fair amount of psychology in play when designing a good interface. By “good”, I really mean “successful.” Even the prettiest interface fails if it doesn’t deliver the experience the user expects. In this case, I expected to see a news story about the oil spill cleanup. Instead, the top third of my

Marketing. I can't stress enough how important effective marketing is. Sure your website is a great marketing tool, but you also have to market your website. It sounds simple, but if nobody knows that you have this incredible website (built by Design Dish, of course :), then nobody will visit and your site will ultimately fail, and nobody wants that.
So how do you market your site? First, let's start at your letterhead, business cards and other items that are already currently in use by your company. Place your website address on every article you send out, anything that you know your customers will read. If you are in the bar business, consider getting custom coasters with your logo and web address on them, perhaps matchbooks with your web address on them. You can never ever ever market yourself enough, this means going through out all mediums in the advertising field and ultimately getting the name of your company out. So business cards, flyers, letterhead, any promotional material should absolutely have your web address on them. There is still something very profound about a firm handshake and a quality business card being passed in a meeting that declares your professionalism, security and ineptitude to handle the tasks set before you, but your job doesn't end there.

So you've gotten your new website online. Whew! The hard part is done, right? Not necessarily. A common misnomer about marketing on the web is that getting online is the key to all the world's riches. But wait: there's a step missing in there. You've got your site, but no one knows it's there yet. Okay, don't panic... what do you do now??
This is where the "rubber hits the road", so to speak. Your website is up, and now it's time to drive traffic to it. There are so many different ways to achieve this. Before you get overwhelmed, just take a breath, grab a cup of coffee, and let's review your options:
- Search Engine Placement
Search engines are absolutely essential in today's marketplace.Think about the way you access the information that you're looking for online, what steps do you take? You built a website, the demographic for your website is online and most online users use a search engine to begin their search for a service or a product. Let's use Google as an example, Google processes over 1 billion search requests per day. If you are not manually submitting your website to the various engines available, spiders still query throughout the internet looking for relevant articles and websites that will automatically list your website on their searches.
